1) Leaving No Trace – Self-Cleaning Paint
This design is inspired by the surface structure of lotus leaves. This line of self-cleaning paints uses the microscopic structure of leaves which repel water. I really liked this design because it saves the cost of buying other products to clean paints and most importantly, it eliminates the use of toxic detergents.
2) Keeping the Bugs Out – Antibacterial Film
Australian company Biosignal studied a type of seaweed in which natural compounds prevent bacteria from gathering. They developed a film that prevents bacteria from colonizing by “jamming” or interfering with the signals used by microbes to communicate with one another. They applied this technology to contact lenses, which prevents infection. I really like this design because I personally know how painful eye infections can be and I also hate wearing contact lenses. The reason why I don’t like wearing contact lenses is because luckily I don’t need them and also I think they may be harmful to eyes. However, knowing that they can help me prevent eye infections, I would become more likely to wear them.
3) Avian Elements – High-Speed Train
Japan’s 500 Series Shinkansen bullet train’s design emulated one of the quietest birds, owls by designing small serrations similar to those on owl feathers. The train’s nose which is modeled after a kingfisher’s beak is also its most obvious biomimetic design element. I really like this design because most people would agree with me if I say that I find the noises train/subway makes extremely annoying. The design itself is very simple and attractive, along with the advantage of reducing noise pollution.
